American Leaders site open at SalemPress.com

cover_mdal.jpgWhile we continue to bask in the awards glow for Milestone Documents in American History, it’s time to look to the future. To that end, our distributor, Salem Press, has launched the sales effort for our forthcoming title Milestone Documents of American Leaders with this page at their Web site. In addition to a complete overview of the title, the site offers a table of contents, a full sample entry (William McKinley), and extensive information on the free companion online database, Salem History. Just as with our first title, libraries that purchase American Leaders will receive free access to same content on Salem History through 2011. This continues to be one of the best deals in reference publishing.

You can preorder the book/database directly through the Web site, but phone orders are also welcome (800-221-1592). The set costs $395 and will be published in April.

Obviously I’m the very definition of biased, but I think the content is utterly compelling. It offers a fresh way to study notable Americans: through their own writings and speeches, with informative analysis by historians alongside the full text of those key documents. Time and again while reading some of the entries, I’ve been stopped dead in my tracks by incredible material, and I’m not just talking about leading lights such as Lincoln, King, or Kennedy. From the wit of Abigail Adams to the passion of Louis Brandeis to the prescience of George Kennan, the documents included in our set will make you think about American history in a new way. If I can get my backside in gear, I will attempt to craft some special blog posts about some of these folks in the coming weeks.

At the upcoming ALA Midwinter convention in Denver, we’ll be rolling out some special promotions for American Leaders. I encourage all librarians who are attending the convention to visit the Salem Press booth for more details. I’ll be there in person, so please do stop by to introduce yourself.
