Yes the revolution is coming. Like it or not students today are accustomed to a type of information gathering that is fueled by 24/7 connectedness, hand held mobile access, and instant results. Reading assigned chapters from a textbook does not provide this experience. This is the main reason we developed www.historytunes.com. , to engage students in a new, technology driven way. Earbuds, iPods, and the internet replace the static nature of textbook drudgery.

Garth, that is really cool. What you and Mike are doing with regard to student creation of their own textbook is incredible. Building a class around the idea of students' own work--writing, editing, commenting--is another reason the revolution IS upon us. I know that many teachers are making this kind of student involvement the centerpiece of their classes, and we are thinking a great deal about how we can facilitate this practice in our new site. I hope you will keep us updated on your textbook practice as it evolves.

Thanks for your comment, Ron. I think teachers are moving away from the old textbook model because textbooks are flawed as teaching mechanism and because the price for students/districts is too high. What's needed are less expensive, more flexible and innovative tools that allow teachers and students to take advantage of tech tools (Web, ereaders, iPads, phones, etc.). We hope to provide one such option, and I'm sure there will be many others to come. How many will come via the big textbook houses? The publishing geek in me will be watching that carefully....

You are absolutely correct! The change is happening albeit slowly in some areas. Many of us in Social Studies especially history are moving completely away from the old textbook model. I am looking forward to your new site and hopefully many other publishers and educators will move toward this model of our future in education.

I have been working on a standards based student created textbook with web resources for four years. The written work of 7th graders is not perfect, but they are engage in leaning "how" to do history and use multi sources to do it. I teach in a one to one school, so using a wiki to make the book is a perfect way to edit, change, add to the book year after year. Last night Mike and I did a webshow on our blog site about the online textbook. Mike is another 7th grade teacher about 35 miles from my school and his students are also adding to the book each year. Give it a look at www.teachersfortomorrow.net
